October

It is now the end of October and we now have growing in the greenhouses and outside the in the surrounding area about 5000 plants. We are getting things ready for harvest. During this time I have worked with a group from South Carolina in San Francisco de Macoris. There were 14 people in this group and myself. We painted an entire nursey school inside and out. We painted bookshelves, characterson the wall and cribs. The staff of the school also helped in painting and cleaning their classrooms. We rejuvenated a playground by painting the walls and the swings and removing the weeds and put new stone down. We had a great week together working hard to make a difference and then one of the workers decided to pay for new mattresses for the 6 cribs and new mattresses for the kids to sleep on. It was great to see the faces of the people with all the changes. I was also working at the Greenhouses keeping things moving along. The next week we had a group come from Nebraska to the Camp to help paint the kitchen and the dining room. We had 8 people in this group and they painted the entire section which also consisted of 2 bathrooms, laundry room and a very long passageway. We had a lot of fun doing this project, one night we had a small party with the community and the group gave away gifts. It was nice to see the groups working and mixing together with the community. Now it is back to work in the greenhouses and getting things ready for harvest. The plants are growing big and strong and we hope for a very large harvest much like when Peter though down his net in the water and brought in more fish then the boat could handle. Estamos consiguiendo cosas listos para la cosecha. Durante este tiempo he trabajado con un grupo de Carolina del Sur en San Francisco de Macoris. Había 14 personas en este grupo y yo. Pintamos toda la escuela por dentro y por fuera. Pintamos estanterías, dibujamos paredes y cunas. El personal de la escuela también ayudó con la pintura y la limpieza de sus aulas. Restauramos un parque infantil, pintando las paredes y los columpios y eliminando las malas hierbas y pusimos nuevas piedras abajo. Tuvimos una gran semana juntos, trabajando duro para hacer una diferencia y luego uno de los misioneros decidió comprar nuevos colchones para las 6 cunas y otros colchones nuevos para que los niños duerman. Fue genial ver las caras de las personas con todos los cambios. Yo también estaba trabajando en los invernaderos para mantener las cosas en movimiento al mismo tiempo. La siguiente semana, tuvimos un grupo de Nebraska en el campamento para ayudar a pintar la cocina y el comedor. Teníamos 8 personas en este grupo y pintamos toda la sección que también consistió en 2 baños , lavadero y un largo pasillo. Hemos tenido un montón de diversión haciendo este proyecto , una noche tuvimos una pequeña fiesta con la comunidad y el grupo dió regalos. Fue agradable ver a los grupos de trabajo y la mezcla junto con la comunidad . Ahora se ha vuelto a trabajar en los invernaderos y preparar las cosas para la cosecha . Las plantas están creciendo grande y fuerte , y esperamos una gran cosecha, tanto como cuando Pedro tiró su red en el agua y trajeron más peces y luego el barco casi se hundía. Bendiciones

Jarabacoa Greenhouses

The past few weeks I have been assigned the greenhouses in Jarabacoa and will continue there for some time. We have converted about 8 acres of land into a small farm. We have 2 greenhouses on the property which will consist of one having a 1000 tomato plants and the other 1000 sweet red peppers. The area we converted will have 500 plants of Auyama (pumpkin) and 200 Chinola (passion fruit) plants. We had to build a trellis type structure to hold the Chinola vines. We also will have about 500 platano and 500 banana plants. Next week we are planting 500 eggplants. We have 4 employees. We are trying to make a difference in this community by having jobs for the people, by creating this greenhouse project we will employ many people in the area, some for maintaining the property, some when harvest is due others on delivering the produce and others for maintenance. This will impact the community by many people working on different things to keep this project going for a long time. I will keep you informed and have some photos to show you what is happening in Jarabacoa. Thank be to God for All things. Blessings Las últimas semanas se me ha asignado los invernaderos en Jarabacoa y continuará allí durante algún tiempo. Hemos convertido unas 8 hectáreas de tierra en una pequeña granja. Tenemos 2 invernaderos en la propiedad, que consistirá en una de ellas con un 1000 plantas de tomate y los otros 1.000 pimientos rojos dulces. La zona nos convertimos tendrá 500 plantas de Auyama (calabaza) y 200 Chinola (fruta de la pasión) plantas. Tuvimos que construir una estructura tipo enrejado para mantener las viñas chinola. También tendremos unos 500 platano y 500 plantas de banano. La semana que viene estamos plantando 500 berenjenas. Contamos con 4 empleados. Estamos tratando de hacer una diferencia en esta comunidad por tener puestos de trabajo para la gente, por la creación de este proyecto de invernadero que dará empleo a muchas personas en la zona, algunos de mantenimiento de la propiedad, algunos cuando la cosecha es otros debido a la entrega de los productos y otros para mantenimiento. Esto tendrá un impacto en la comunidad, muchas personas que trabajan en diferentes cosas para mantener este proyecto en marcha desde hace mucho tiempo. Computers

    Last week we had a group here called World Computer Exchange which donated over 150 computers and laptops to our Diocese. They brought in about 250 computers and the balance of computers will be distributed throughout the country.  After the computers were distributed throughout the Diocese their were still 15 computers left to be distributed at a different location. Then the iEarn group came in to teach classes in coordination with the World Computer Exchange group. I was asked to set up a network so that iEarn teachers could train new teachers from our Diocesan schools in the iEarn network. The teachers taught  classes all week in which many people including myself attended classes. The iEarn network is an International Education and Resource Network. It was  very well attended and now the teachers from our schools will be able to teach the children how to use the iEarn network. So many computer labs have now been set up from this donation.  Thanks be to God.

     La semana pasada tuvimos un grupo aquí llamado World Computer Exchange que donó más de 150 ordenadores y portátiles a nuestra Diócesis. Trajeron a unos 250 ordenadores y el resto de las computadoras serán distribuidas en todo el país. Después de que los ordenadores se distribuyeron a lo largo de la Diócesis su eran todavía 15 ordenadores dejan para ser distribuido en un lugar diferente. A continuación, el grupo de iEARN vino a dar clases en coordinación con el grupo de Exchange Computer World. Me pidieron la creación de una red para que los docentes de iEARN pueden formar a nuevos maestros de nuestras escuelas diocesanas en la red iEARN. Los profesores imparten las clases en toda la semana en la que muchas personas incluyéndome a mí asistieron a clases. La red iEARN es una Red Internacional de Educación y Recursos. Fue una muy buena asistencia, y ahora los docentes de nuestras escuelas será capaz de enseñar a los niños cómo utilizar la red iEARN. Muchos laboratorios de computadoras ahora se han creado a partir de esta donación. Demos gracias a Dios.

August 6th, 2013 Status in Bani

 Bani is the capital of the province of Peravia in the Dominican Republic. It was founded March 3, 1764 by Manuel Azlor and Urries. The city name comes from the fact that it was ruled by a chief called Bani in pre-Columbian times. In Taino language, Bani means lots of water.

About 2 weeks ago we had a Group from Florida work in Bani. The group consisted of 16 people and myself made 17. We split up into 3 groups, one group did vacation Bible school, one group painted the new church and the other group built pews for the church. The group with the VBS consisted of six people plus the Dominicans teachers and they had two sessions everyday with a total of over 300 kids. The group that painted were six people plus the Dominican workers. The church had just been completed so they had to paint a primer inside and out and then paint the color. But before they could paint they had to sand down all the concrete walls to make them smooth for painting.. A few people painted the roof to seal it from water filtration.. In one week the church was completely painted and the roof sealed. The other group including myself and some Dominicans built the pews for the church. We had to build sixteen of them eight feet long. The group worked like a well run machine, all the wood had to be sanded and routed before being able to be assembled. Once we started to assemle all the wood had to be stained. We also had to build two Clergy chairs and one chair for the Bishop and two acolyte pews. By the end of the week everyone was very tired but we completed all sixteen pews and the three chairs and delivered them to the church where we then celebrated with the painting group and theVacation Bible group and all the Dominican workers. It was a great and productive week. Thanks be to God for all!!

 Hace 2 semanas que tuvimosun grupo de trabajo de la Florida en Bani. El grupo estaba formado por 16 personasy yo hace 17 años. Nos dividimos en 3grupos, un grupo hizo la escuela bíblica de vacaciones, un grupo pintó la nueva iglesia y el otro grupo construyó bancas de la iglesia. El grupo con elVBS integrado por seis personas, además de los maestros dominicanos y tuvieron dos sesiones diarias, con un total de más de 300 niños. El grupo que pintó eran seis personas, además de los trabajadores dominicanos. La iglesiahabía sido completado por lo que tuvieron que pintar una cartilla dentro y por fuera y luego pintar el color. Pero antes de que pudieran pintar tuvieron que lijar todas las paredes de concreto para que seansuaves para la pintura .. Algunas personas pintan el techo para sellarlo de filtración de agua .. En una semana, la iglesia fue totalmente pintado y el techo cerrado. El otro grupo incluido yo mismo y algunos dominicos construyeron las bancas de la iglesia. Tuvimos que construir dieciséis de ellos ocho pies de largo.El grupo funcionaba como una máquina bien dirigido, toda la madera tuvo que ser lijado y derrotóantes de poder ser montado. Una vez que empezamos a assemle toda la madera tuvo que ser manchado. También tuvimos que construir dos Clérigos sillas y una silla para el Obispo y dosbancas acólito. Al final de la semana todos estaban muy cansados​​, pero hemos completado las dieciséis bancos y las tressillas y los entregó a la iglesia donde nos celebramos a continuación con el grupo de la pintura y el grupo de Biblia theVacation y todos los trabajadores dominicanos. Fue un gran y productiva semana. Demos gracias a Dios por todo!

June 2013

I know it has been some time since my last blog and I appoligize. I have been very busy with all the groups traveling here from United States. We have had in the past 6 weeks about 30 plus groups. I meet almost every group at the airport and send them to their destinations. I spent 2 weeks in Jarabacoa working with 2 groups completing houses from last year and 2 more new houses. We completes the 2 houses from last year with new roofs and floors. We also stuccoed the front walls of each of the homes and then painted the houses. The next week we started construction on 2 more houses and completed all the walls only. We worked on 3 other peoples homes by adding rooms, a porch and painted them also. Last year this group installed a greenhouse and this year after much success with the greenhouses we cleaned them out to get ready for new crops to be planted. Then we had a little time left before the group went back to the United States so we painted the school. I worked one week in a preschool with a group from Florida. We had to scrape and paint the entire school with only 4 people and myself. Then one day we had this terrible storm and another group that was working close by couldn´t work so they came by us. In all we had that day 12 people working with us to complete most of the job. Last week we had a big meeting with the churches from Province 9 and spent most of the time assisting whereever needed. It has been a great time working with the groups and we are expecting many more groups. I am also working with the Womans group from the Episcopal church starting new bussiness and empowering woman. Next month we should have the sewing shop open and making Stoles for Clergy.

Sé que ha pasado mucho tiempo desde mi último blog y appoligize. He estado muy ocupado con todos los grupos que viajan aquí desde Estados Unidos. Hemos tenido en las últimas 6 semanas aproximadamente 30 grupos más. Me encuentro con casi todos los grupos en el aeropuerto y les envío a sus destinos. Pasé 2 semanas en Jarabacoa trabajar con 2 grupos completando casas del año pasado y 2 casas nuevas más. Nos completa el 2 casas del año pasado con nuevos techos y pisos. También estucado de las paredes frontales de cada una de las casas y luego pintamos las casas. La próxima semana empezamos la construcción de 2 casas más y terminamos sólo todas las paredes. Hemos trabajado en otras 3 casas de las personas mediante la adición de habitaciones, un porche y los pintamos también. El año pasado este grupo instaló un invernadero y este año después de mucho éxito con los invernaderos que les limpió para estar listo para nuevos cultivos para ser plantados. Luego tuvimos un poco de tiempo antes de que el grupo volvió a los Estados Unidos por lo que pintamos la escuela. Yo trabajé una semana en un preescolar con un grupo de Florida. Hemos tenido que raspar y pintar toda la escuela con sólo 4 personas y yo. Hasta que un día tuvimos la terrible tormenta y otro grupo que estaba trabajando cerca no podía trabajar así que vinieron por nosotros. En todo lo que tuvimos que día a 12 personas que trabajan con nosotros para completar la mayor parte del trabajo. La semana pasada tuvimos una gran reunión con las iglesias de la provincia de 9 y pasamos la mayor parte del tiempo ayudando dondequiera que sea necesario. Ha sido un gran tiempo de trabajo con los grupos y estamos esperando muchos más grupos. También estoy trabajando con el grupo de Womans de la Iglesia Episcopal de partida nueva bussiness y una mujer poderosa. El mes que viene deberíamos tener el taller de costura abierta y haciendo estolas para el Clero.

GEMN Conference in Bogota

I just returned from the GEMN conference in Bogota Colombia . We were there for a week long conference. The GEMN stands for Global Episcopal Mission Network and we had many different countries from Latin America represented along with people from the United States. We had many workshops and guest speakers telling us all about mission work in the field and also about financial and economic sustainability. They also spoke about different projects that they were working on and the ones that worked the best. There were also workshops on how to plan projects and make budgets for them so that they would be successful. Everday there was time for Bible reflection and how the Bible passage pertained to what was happening in our mission lives. We also traveled to 3 different sites. I went to 2 of the three. One was to a church in Soacha where the womens group were helping many other families that were displaced from their homes in other parts of the country to move to Soacha and establish new lives. It was very moving and inspirational to hear the women speak about what was happening in their lives and how they were trying to move things in a very positive way to making better lives for themselves. The other site I went to was a ranch in the top of a mountain. Bogota is about 8600 feet above sea level and we had to go to a ranch that was another 1500 feet up. We rode in 2 buses to get to the top of the mountain but we didn´t make it that far. The one bus broke down so we had to hike the rest of the way up to the church and ranch and it was a couple hundred feet up, but some of us made it to the top to see the ranch and the church and it was a beautiful sight. The people of this area are all farmers and very self sufficient. After our short visit we then had to hike back down to the waiting new bus to take us back to Bogota. On Ascension Thursday we had the Presiding Bishop visit with us for our church service, it was very moving and a beautiful service. At the conference we had plenty of time to make new friends and for most of us to share our spiritual journeys. Thanks to all who worked so hard to put this conference together and for all the help from The Episcopal Church Center.

 Acabo de regresar de la  conferencia GEMN en Bogotá Colombia. Estábamos allí en una conferencia de una semana de duración. El GEMN significa Red Global Misión Episcopal y tuvimos muchos países diferentes de América Latina representados junto con la gente de los Estados Unidos. Tuvimos muchos talleres y oradores invitados hablaron todo acerca de la obra misionera en el campo y también acerca de la sostenibilidad económica y financiera. También hablaron sobre los diferentes proyectos que estaban trabajando y los mejores trabajados. También hubo talleres sobre la forma de planificar los proyectos y hacer presupuestos para que ellos tuvieran éxito. Cada dia hubo tiempo para la reflexión bíblica y el pasaje de la Biblia se refería a lo que estaba sucediendo en nuestra vida en la misión. También viajamos a 3 sitios diferentes. Fui a 2 de los tres. Uno de ellos fue a una iglesia en Soacha, donde el grupo mujeres estaban ayudando a muchas otras familias que fueron desplazadas de sus hogares en otras partes del país para ir a Soacha y establecer una nueva vida. Fue muy conmovedor e inspirador escuchar a las mujeres hablar sobre lo que estaba sucediendo en sus vidas y cómo estaban tratando de impulsar las cosas de una manera muy positiva para mejorar sus vidas. Al otro sitio que fui era un rancho en la cima de una montaña. Bogotá es de unos 8.600 metros sobre el nivel del mar y tuvimos que ir a un rancho que era otros 1.500 metros de altura. Nos montamos en 2 autobuses para llegar a la cima de la montaña, cosa que no hacemos tanto. El bus se averió, así que tuvimos que caminar el resto del camino hasta la iglesia y el rancho, fue un par de cientos de metros de altura, pero algunos de nosotros llegamos a la cima para ver el rancho y la iglesia y fue una hermosa vista. Los habitantes de esta zona son los agricultores, muy autosuficiente. Después de nuestra breve visita, tuvimos que caminar de regreso al nuevo autobús esperando para llevarnos de regreso a Bogotá. El jueves de la Ascensión, tuvimos la visita del Obispo Presidente con nosotros para nuestro servicio de la iglesia, fue muy emocionante y un hermoso servicio. En la conferencia tenía un montón de tiempo para hacer nuevos amigos y para que la mayoría de nosotros compartiéramos nuestro camino espiritual. Gracias a todos los que trabajaron tan duro para hacer esta conferencia juntos y por toda la ayuda desde el Centro de la Iglesia Episcopal.

Encuentro En Mision

A couple of weeks ago we had our Encuentro En Mision. During this time we had about 60 people from United States come to see what mission work here is like. We had many different workshops for people to learn the history of the Diocese as well as where work is still needed. We also had cultural singing and dancing. That was on Friday and Saturday and then on Sunday we had about 4000 people from the the Episcopal church in the Dominican Republic as well as the people from the United States go to the Volleyball stadium for Church service . It was a grand celebration .


Then for the next week we took groups on tours throughout the Diocese showing them the progress we are making and where progress is still needed. We received many good responses and many of the tour groups were willing to go back to their home parishes to raise awareness of what we are doing here and to raise money needed for schools and churches. Also we were talking about where wells for water are needed and where we need filtration systems to purify the water for the surrounding neighborhoods to stop the spread of disease. We were also discussing different types of employment that may be started here to give people a chance to better support their families. Overall this was a very succesful Encuentro En Mision. Looking forward to next years Encuentro En Mision.

Hace un par de semanas tuvimos nuestro Encuentro En Misión. Durante este tiempo hemos tenido cerca de 60 personas de Estados Unidos que vienen a ver como es el trabajo de misión aquí. Tuvimos muchos talleres diferentes para que la gente aprenda la historia de la diócesis, así como donde aún se necesita trabajo. También tuvimos cantos y bailes culturales. Eso fue el viernes y el sábado y el domingo tuvimos alrededor de 4000 personas de la Iglesia Episcopal de la República Dominicana, así como del pueblo de los Estados Unidos en la cancha de voleibol del Palacio de los Deportes para el servicio de clausura. Fue una gran celebración.

A continuación, para la semana siguiente llevamos grupos en giras por toda la Diócesis mostrándoles el progreso que estamos haciendo y donde todavía es necesario avanzar. Hemos recibido muchas respuestas buenas y muchos de los grupos de turistas estaban dispuestos a volver a su casa parroquias para dar a conocer lo que estamos haciendo aquí y para recaudar el dinero necesario para las escuelas y las iglesias. También hablábamos de que se necesitan pozos de agua y en el que necesitamos sistemas de filtración para purificar el agua para los barrios de los alrededores para detener la propagación de la enfermedad. También estábamos discutiendo diferentes tipos de empleo que puedan ser propiciados aquí para dar a la gente la oportunidad de prestar un mejor apoyo a sus familias. En general, fue un muy exitoso Encuentro En Misión. Esperamos por los próximos años de Encuentro En Misión.

one year

I have now been in the Dominican Republic for one year and am happy to report that things are moving forward. After the convention we have had a visitor from Virginia come here to fund the operation of the Vocational School in Consuelo. The government, the Arch Deacon and myself are now in full swing to open the Bakery in Jalonga. We have also started a new project of digging wells in all church and school locations that currently don´t have wells and connecting the ones we do have, since water here is very sporadic. We are also starting to push forward co-ops to help provide people with jobs. The idea is to teach people how to fish instead of just handing them a fish. This will provide job oportunities for their families. I am on my way to my convention in New Jersey to give updates of our progress. Thanks be to God and all of you who assist me in my work helping the most impoverished in the Dominican Republic.

Ahora he estado en la República Dominicana por un año y estoy feliz de informar que las cosas están avanzando. Después de la convención hemos tenido una visita de Virginia aquí para financiar el funcionamiento de la Escuela Profesional de Consuelo. El gobierno, el Diácono Archidiocesano y yo estamos ahora en plena marcha para abrir la panadería en Jalonga. También hemos iniciado un nuevo proyecto de excavación de pozos en todas las iglesias y lugares escolares que actualmente no tienen pozos y la conexión de los que tenemos, ya que el agua aquí es muy esporádica. También estamos empezando a impulsar las cooperativas para ayudar a proporcionar a las personas puestos de trabajo. La idea es enseñar a la gente a pescar en vez de simplemente dar un pez. Esto proporcionará oportunidades de empleo para sus familias. Estoy en camino a mi convención en Nueva Jersey para dar informe actualizado de nuestro progreso. Gracias a Dios y a todos ustedes por asistirme en mi trabajo para ayudar a los más pobres en la República Dominicana.

Episcopal Church Convention Dominican Republic

Well it is finally here the Dominican Republic Episcopal Church Convention. We have been preparing for this weekend for about six weeks. We were painting; cleaning, fixing all things that needed repairs and organizing many things. The hall where the convention will take place is in its best shape in a long time. Now the people from United States will start arriving today and the delegates will start arriving tomorrow.

Bueno, ya está aquí la República Dominicana Episcopal Church Convención. Nos hemos estado preparando para este fin de semana durante seis semanas. Estábamos pintando, limpiando, arreglando todas las cosas que necesitaban reparaciones y organizar muchas cosas. La sala donde la convención se llevará a cabo está en su mejor forma en un tiempo largo. Ahora el pueblo de los Estados Unidos comenzarán a llegar hoy y los delegados comenzarán a llegar mañana.

Encounter Parade

Sunday January 13, 2013 the Episcopal Church form the Dominican Republic had a parade in San Pedro de Macoris for our Encuentra Meeting this April. We had about 500 people walking with us through the town singing and  dancing letting the people of the town know all about our missionary workshop. Their were also  military bands and many bands from our churches playing music for a two and a half hour walk. After the walk we all went to San Esteban Church for Mass. The enthusiasm  after the long walk in the hot sun and singing and dancing and in the Mass was fantastic everybody was still singing and shouting and dancing in the aisles. It was a great day!!

Domingo 13 de enero 2013 el formulario de la Iglesia Episcopal de la República Dominicana tuvo un desfile en San Pedro de Macorís para nuestra Reunión Encuentra este mes de abril. Cerca de 500 personas Teníamos con nosotros caminando por la ciudad cantando y bailando dejando que la gente del pueblo sabe todo acerca de nuestro taller misionero. También fueron sus bandas militares y bandas de música tocando muchas de nuestras iglesias para una caminata de dos horas y media. Después de la caminata nos fuimos todos a la iglesia de San Esteban, para la misa El entusiasmo después de la larga caminata bajo el sol y el canto y el baile y en la Misa fue fantástico todo el mundo seguía cantando y gritando y bailando en los pasillos. Fue un gran día!

Last week we were preparing two apartments for the Seminarians coming from Virginia. They had to be cleaned and furnished. They will be here studying for the month of January. We are their guides when they are not in class showing them different things here in the Dominican Republic. This past Sunday “Epiphany” is a big celebration here the children when they come to church they are given gifts, they also have cake and cookies and drinks. It is really special to see the faces of the children We are also in preperation for the Dominican Republic Convention which will take place February eight and ninth. I am also working with another Priest to open a preschool in Bonao. The bakery is still in progress and we are hoping to have it fully funcional by the end of January. I am also checking on construction sites and making sure everything is going smoothly. It is a very busy time now with convention, Encuentra meeting, my own convention in New Jersey and with the groups coming here.

La semana pasada estábamos preparando dos apartamentos para los seminaristas procedentes de Virginia. Tenían que ser limpiado y amueblado. Estarán aquí a estudiar para el mes de enero. Nosotros somos sus guías cuando no están en clase mostrándoles cosas diferentes aquí en la República Dominicana. El pasado domingo "Epifanía" es una gran celebración aquí a los niños cuando van a la iglesia se les da regalos, también tienen pasteles y galletas y bebidas. Es muy especial ver las caras de los chicos Nosotros somos también en preparación para la Convención de República Dominicana, que tendrá lugar los días ocho y nueve. También estoy trabajando con otro sacerdote para abrir un preescolar en Bonao. La panadería está aún en curso y esperamos que esté plenamente funcional a finales de enero. También estoy comprobando en obras de construcción y asegurarse de que todo va bien.
